Thousands pack Piedmont Park for Dogwood Fest

Posted: Updated:

Its spring time and one of the city's most popular events is in full swing.

The 77th Annual Dogwood Festival has taken over Piedmont Park.

The event is an art lovers dream.

Marie Vowels met with some friends from all over the country for her first Dogwood Festival.

"This is a great location and the vendors have been absolutely amazing. We love the artists," said Vowels.

It's so popular it brought people in from as far away as Rhode Island.

"I went online and found out about all the music that's here and artists that come from all around so I was real interested in checking it out," said Elaine Smith.

The same is true for the artists. They come from all over the country to show off what they've got.

"This is an art savvy town for me. They appreciate what I have to show and I do well here," said artist Kurt Ruby.

But the art isn't the only attraction.

There's also a huge dog show that draws hundreds of people wanting to see the dogs chase a Frisbee and do tricks.

"I love when they do a flip and catch the Frisbee," said a group of young girls.

Combine art and dogs with carnival rides and music you get an event that definitely keeps people busy. Vowels and her crew said they were planning to stay all day long and come back again the next day.

You easily could stay all day because when you get hungry there's plenty of food for you.

There's a large variety of food, but Abraham Lincoln had no problems picking what he wanted.

"I had to go with the old fashion turkey leg. You don't get it very often and it's the only time my wife allows me to eat it so I had to chow into it and devoured it within 15-20 minutes," said Lincoln.

If you're counting calories the Dogwood Fest might just be big enough and spread out enough to take care of you.

"You burn off a lot of what you eat so it's really a great event," said Lincoln.
