ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Gigal honored its volunteers who help women restart their lives with a special ceremony on Saturday.

Gigal is a residential recovery program for homeless drug-addicted women in metro Atlanta.

Kenya Kirkendoll was honored as volunteer of the year. She is a nurse who implemented a health prevention program that includes Georgia State nursing students.

"It was a shock, bit it was also a confirmation that my work wasn't in vain, not to say I ever thought it was. It was just a good feeling to be acknowledged," said Kirkendoll.

"I was having one of those days, and she just walked up to me and told me that she loved me, but God loved me more and that's just what sticks out for me," said Tracy Brandon, Gigal resident.

The organization said 70 percent of its graduates maintain their sobriety and still are employed and have housing after one year.
