FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The Offices of District Attorney Paul L. Howard, Jr. and Solicitor General Carmen Smith are joining forces this month in recognition of National Crime Victims' Rights week, April 21-27, 2013. The Victim Assistance programs from each prosecution office will partner to raise awareness about crime victims' rights and connect victims and their families to available services and resources.

"National Crime Victims' Rights Week is an opportunity to not only remember and bring honor to countless crime victims, but to draw attention to the prevalence of violence and crime in our communities," says Shannon Hervey, Director of Victim Services for the District Attorney's Office.

The theme for the 2013 National Crime Victims' Rights Week is "New Challenges and New Solutions."

"This is an appropriate focus," notes Amanda Planchard, Director of Victim Assistance for the Office of the Solicitor General. "Despite substantial progress in the crime victims' arena, challenges remain for service providers as they strive to reach and meet the needs of all crime victims in these fiscally difficult times."

The Victim Assistance teams will mark the week-long occasion with several important events designed to engage the Fulton County community.
