Fish fry for family of murder victim

Posted: Updated:

The same day Atlanta police announced an arrest in the murders of a man and woman who were shot and killed outside a home on Holly Street NW, the community held a fish fry to help pay for the funeral of one of the victims.

Michael O'Neal is now in custody and charged with two counts of murder.

Derrick Pitts, 28, is one of two people O'Neal is accused for shooting to death.

More than 200 people attended the fish fry Sunday at Gresham Park in Decatur, to celebrate Pitts' life.

Pitts' father, Derrick Hurst, told CBS Atlanta News that they have a sense of peace knowing someone has now been arrested for his murder.

"It hurts. It hurts because he was a good guy. He was a good guy. He would get along with anybody. He would open his heart," said Hurst.

Hurst said now family and friends are opening their hearts and pockets at the fish fry.

He called it the community's way helping the family with funeral expenses.

Sharon Gleaton told CBS Atlanta she thinks about her son every day.

"I'm taking it day by day. The family is taking it pretty hard. But they're all taking it day by day," said Gleaton.

Just a few days early Wednesday, it was a much different scene as Atlanta police search the area along Holly Street for clues as to why some would gun down Pitts and the second victim, Shonenneshia Tucker.

Investigators said O'Neal was arguing with Tucker moments before the murders.

Back at the fish fry, the family of Derrick Pitts was glad to know someone has now been charged. But, his mother can't help but think of the family of the second victim and the alleged killer.

"I pray for him also. My prayers go and thoughts go out to the family, his family as well as her family. But I'm glad they caught him," said Gleaton.

Michael O'Neal is in the Fulton county jail. His first court appearance is set for Monday morning.
