Gladiators lose home advantage to bookings at Gwinnett Center

Posted: Updated:

The Gwinnett Gladiators played their last home game during the playoffs due to venue scheduling.

The Gwinnett Center is booked up with other events during the remainder of the playoffs.

The team's owner said he was told by arena management that they just can't afford to hold tentative dates for play-off games.

It's a decision that's heartbreaking for the team and fans who want to see the puck dropped on the ice at home.

Saturday night the Zamboni could be seen cutting the ice at Gwinnett Center for what is likely the last time during the playoff season.

The Gladiators beat Cincinnati 3-0, tying up the series.

Round 2 games will have to be played in Cincinnati.

Fans like Jack King told CBS Atlanta News they feel cheated.

"I think the arena did wrong on that. They booked so much stuff ahead of time. Being the Gladiators [is] their main tenant. They did it, so," said King.

Chris Kidd and his coworkers drove from Columbus, GA to catch the Gladiators play at home.

"We'd like to see more games, obviously, but it looks like it's going to Cincinnati for the rest of the series," said Kidd.

Some fans leaving the arena are trying not to let the loss of home game advantage get them down.

The Edge family could be seen all decked out in their team gear. Mom said she's willing go to Cincinnati to support her team.

Other fans like season ticket holder Lindsay Chester were still hoping something can be done to fix the problem.

"We should be able to play here. It's really upsetting, to not just me, but everyone in the arena that we can't be here. So, it's sad," said Chester.

A spokesperson for the team told CBS Atlanta News, only one home game in this round will actually be played on the road in on the road in Cincinnati.

If the Gladiators make it out of this round of the playoffs, then it's on to the Conference Finals followed by the Kelly Cup Finals.
