I-285 east at Riverside Drive was blocked because of a truck fire on Monday morning.

The charred remains of the big rig and 250-ton crane it carried sat on the side of the highway and caused traffic problems throughout the day.

"I think you got a problem with on lookers. They see this they want to take a look and they slow down," said Sandy Springs police Officer Jeff Holmes.

The driver was on his way to Greenville, SC, when he heard a pop in the cabin and it started filling up with smoke.

"He was able to get out in time, got his lunch box out even," said David Chittick, an engineer from Maxim - the company that owns the crane.

All lanes are now open, but they may be closed again when crews get ready to remove what's left of the truck and crane.

"I think we're going to have to cut it apart and take it in pieces. At least separate the boom from the upper then haul the boom out separate from the cab," said Chittick.

Chittick said crews will likely move the crane after the evening rush.
