Former Cherokee County PTA treasurer arrested

CANTON, GA (CBS46) -

Cherokee County Sheriff's detectives have arrested the former PTA treasurer from Indian Knoll Elementary School. Kim Turman is accused of stealing more than $12,000 from the PTA between 2011 and 2012.

Turman, who lives in Canton, is also accused of stealing more than $5,800 from the Sequoyah High School Girls Soccer Booster Club when she worked as treasurer for them in 2012.

She is charged with two counts of felony theft by taking and has been released on a $52,000 bond.

Authorities say the Georgia PTA and Sequoyah High School Girls Soccer Booster Club cooperated fully in their investigation.

The Cherokee County School District realesed the following statement:

"The Indian Knoll Elementary School PTA and Sequoyah High School Girls Soccer Booster Club alleged financial discrepancies do not involve Cherokee County School District funds or employees.

"Whenever PTA or Booster Club leaders determine a local unit's financial records need to be audited due to discrepancies, the School District offers assistance. In this instance, the Georgia PTA conducted the audit for the Indian Knoll PTA, and the Booster Club recruited a retired CPA to conduct its audit.

"The School District appreciates that the local PTA and Booster Club leadership can be relied upon to pursue investigations of inappropriate activities regarding community donations.

"The School District also appreciates that it is the PTA organization operating in our schools, as opposed to an independent parent-teacher group, as this affiliation provides local PTA units with State and National guidance and training in matters including financial management."
