School officials: Decatur is 1 of fastest growing districts in country

Posted: Updated:

A large increase in students has turned the city of Decatur into one of the fastest growing districts in the country.

It's a blessing and a curse for school leaders.

Now leaders will have to make a pitch to taxpayers for more money to expand.

In some parts of the district, construction is already underway for the new changes.

School officials are now ready to unveil plans for a new middle school and a new high school.

This is something many parents say is desperately needed.

"Just watching the number of strollers and kids in neighborhood shows it's obvious it's growing," said parent Peter McDade.

"I've lived in the neighborhood since 2002 and the growth has just been booming, especially the past few years," said resident Heather Tell.

The district is looking at a $50 million expansion.

To get that kind of money, they'll have to ask the voters for help.

First they'll be showing off preliminary plans to not only get the voters' feedback but also to see if they'll even go for it.

Some parents say the crowding is getting so bad they don't even need to see the plans to make up their minds.

"I think this neighborhood really values education and I think we're going to support it no matter what happens," said Tell.

Even though the district has these plans ready to be shown, it is extremely early in this process.

The plans can be changed and that could end up changing the dollar amount once it comes time to go to the voters.

The process starts on Thursday night. There will be a public meeting on growth plans for Decatur city schools at Renfroe Middle School from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
