Atlanta elementary school evacuated because of small fire

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Continental Colony Elementary School in southwest Atlanta was evacuated for a short time Wednesday morning after officials discovered a small bathroom fire.

Shortly after 8 a.m. Atlanta fire crews arrived to find that someone set a roll of toilet tissue on fire in the school bathroom.

The burning tissue set off part of the school's sprinkler system and the building's fire alarm system.

Students and staff were evacuated while firefighters put out the flames.

The bathroom sustained only minor damage.

Students were scheduled to take the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, but it was canceled because water from the sprinkler system affected parts of the building.

The students will spend the remainder of day in the auditorium and gymnasium.

Atlanta Public Schools will bring in clean-up crews for the water.

The CRCT will be rescheduled. Arson investigators are trying to determine who started the fire.
