Atlanta is ranked top termite town in the nation

Atlanta is ranked as the No. 1 termite town in the nation, based on Terminix service calls during the past year.

A pest professional drilled holes around the perimeter of the Wolters' home in Suwanee Thursday.

They installed a new Sentricon bating system to keep out the termites.

Termites turned up in their basement during a home inspection - something the Wolters didn't even notice when they moved into the home six months ago.

"We've always had termite bonds before we've bought a house and we've never had termites so this is the first one we've bought that didn't have a bond and of course it had termites," Katie Wolter said.

Termites look like flying ants, but they're called termite swarmers and they'll come out of the ground, bore into your home and cause thousands of dollars in damage.

"Our average damage claim right now is around $3,000 so that's the risk that you face and a lot of insurance companies do not cover termite damage," Scott O'Hara with Terminix said.

O'Hara said termites do $5 billion worth of damage each year and they're just about everywhere in Georgia because the climate is ideal.

"They can do a lot of damage to a home. They can get into structural components such as sill plates or a floor joist, we've even seen some houses where they've eaten the hardwood flooring out of a house," O'Hara said.

Fortunately for the Wolters, they had their home inspected before it was too late.

"The real estate industry has changed. They used to require a termite bond and now they don't, but if I was buying a house I would definitely require the termite bond," Wolter said.
