Atlanta restaurant helps server get to Boston to see injured stepmom

A local woman's stepmom is one of the victims of the Boston bombings. Leah Powers immediately wanted to go to her, but getting there proved to be a problem. Her co-workers at Del Frisco's Grille in Buckhead stepped in.

Powers considers the people at Del Frisco's family.

"You don't have to be blood to be family. You don't have to be blood to have a support system," Powers said.

She learned that firsthand after her stepmom was injured in the bombings. She sustained burns over a quarter of her body and has already had skin graphs. They talked by phone.

"She said that she was fine and there were a lot of others around her that weren't, had way more severe injuries that she had," Powers said.

When co-workers learned Powers couldn't afford to fly to be with her, they took action.

"I found out people were donating money to try to get me a ticket up there and I'm shaking," Powers said.

She was moved by their actions.

"Just to know they care for me to do something like that is something I never expected," Powers said.

"It hit really close to home with here with one of our own and it wasn't even a question. It was 'What do you need?' and we all chipped in and made it happen," said Del Frisco's general manage Kenneth Perlman.

The team talked with Delta about getting a reduced rate, then chipped in to get her a flight. Del Frisco's matched their donations. Powers feels her stepmom will forever have a bond with those injured on April 15, and it's one she'll now share with her work family too.

"It's a bond that I feel like a lot of them will carry on for the rest of their lives and it's sad but bittersweet to see people reunite and to know how much, how many people care," Powers said.

We did not name Power's stepmom, because authorities in Boston have asked her not to for security reasons.

Powers heads to Boston on Friday morning and will go straight to the hospital.
