More women buying guns for home defense

Posted: Updated:

Gun shop employees at On the Square Gun and Pawn in McDonough, said a lot of first-time gun buyers are women who want to protect themselves.

"I have a home alarm, but that doesn't necessarily stop people," Kim Banaski said.

Banaski is a wife, and mother of 2 children. Her husband travels a lot, so she decided it was time to buy a gun.

"I have never purchased, or even shot a gun, but I am interested in finding something I could handle," Banaski said. "I have to admit, with all that has gone on in the news, all the shootings that have gone on, it makes me a little uncomfortable and want to protect myself."

Recently, On the Square Gun and Pawn ran out of 9mm ammo.

"We didn't have any in stock for about a week," Ezekiel Roberts said.

Roberts said he has customers coming to the store from all over looking for all types of guns and ammo.

"I had a customer come in from Texas. He drove in and said he stopped at gun shops on the way here, and couldn't find any 380 ammo. And when he came in and saw we had 380 ammo, his eyes lit up."

Earlier this month, the Senate rejected President Barack Obama's legislation that would have essentially passed a background check bill. Obama, angry and defiant over the defeat, said he will fight on. That continues to motivate gun advocates to buy more weapons, and more ammo.

"We have had a huge influx of people buying as much as they can," Roberts said. "People are still worried they might have their guns taken away."

Roberts said their store will keep purchasing bulk boxes of ammunition, and try and stay ahead of the shortages.
