The top of Aila Masud's minivan looks like it was pealed open like a sardine can. Arthur Brown's wrecker service towed it Friday.
"We've seen it all," said Brown.
Brown's family owns Brown & Brown Wrecker. They have been in the business for 50 years. He's seen a lot, but seeing Masud's minivan and after hearing what happened made him realize life can be taken in an instant.
"You don't see it very often, but it does happen. That tire, when it comes off the vehicle, on the rim, it has a lot of weight, a lot of momentum and speed," said Brown. "They start bouncing up and down the interstate, when it comes across the wall you don't even know it's coming until it's too late," said Brown.
According to DeKalb County police, Masud, 47, was driving her minivan south on Interstate 85 near Shallowford Road when a tire jumped the median and struck her.
Mekka Parish said the front tire came off of a Ram 3500 that was heading in the opposite direction.
"After that tire came loose, the driver gained control of the truck and pulled on the side of the road and remained on the scene," said Parish.
Masud died on impact. Her 16-year-old daughter was taken to the hospital to be checked for minor injuries.
"Our detectives are trying to determine what caused that tire to come off. After they try to answer some of those questions, then they will make a determination if charges will be filed," said Parish.
Brown said freak accidents like that remind him not to take life or loved ones for granted.
"It was a beautiful day. When that person left home they didn't know this was going to be their last day," said Brown. "Every morning when I leave my house I kiss my wife goodbye because I don't know if it's going to be my last time seeing her. Something could happen to me or something could happen to her."
