Teen struck by Henry County police car dies

Posted: Updated:

The teen who was struck by a Henry County patrol car on Saturday died Sunday.

Chandler Weems, 14, was riding his bicycle on a rural area of MCDonough when he darted out of a driveway and into the road.

"I heard a car coming, and I tried to tell him to stop," said Weems' best friend Bryce Hatmaker.  "He tried to stop but couldn't stop on time, and the car hit him."

The accident happened along North Ola Road near Turner Church Road.

Those who live in the area said Weems and his friends were at a birthday party when they decided to ride over to a neighbor's house. They were leaving that house when witnesses said the teen darted out into the road in front of officer Denise Allyn Romano, 35, who was on her way to work at the time.

"She was the first one there," said Chris Popp, who arrived at the scene just after the accident. "She helped all she could.  I know she's devastated.  Just from what I saw from her when she was helping Chandler, she was trying to keep it together as she was doing that."

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident.  Romano, a six-year veteran of the department, is on paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Henry County police released this statement:

"On behalf of The Henry County Police Department and Police Chief Nichols, we express our sadness and sympathy to the family for their loss."
