Riverdale house catches fire during thunderstorm

RIVERDALE, GA (CBS46) -

Clayton County fire crews have not given the official cause of a fire that left a Riverdale family homeless.

The family told CBS Atlanta News they believe the fire was sparked by lightning.

Fire crews said most of the damage is to the back roof area.

The Alis returned to their storm- and fire-damaged home late Sunday to pick up a few personal items.

Karin Ali said she was home alone at her Riverdale residence when she heard a loud noise.

"I just heard a really loud crash of thunder," said Ali. "And then I heard a cracking noise and smelled smoke."

She said she ran outside to check the back of the house.

"I saw the electrical wire catch fire and saw the roof, the flames going up the roof," said Ali.

The family said because of the fire and smoke damage, they can't stay in their home.

For now, the family will stay in a hotel.

They're just glad no one was hurt.

"Thankfully I heard it soon enough that I could leave," said Ali.

Ali said her mother's employer contacted them right away and is helping with the hotel stay for now.
