State issued burn ban begins Wednesday

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A mandatory state-issued burn ban begins Wednesday and continues through Sept. 30.

Residents are prohibited from burning leaves, tree limbs and other yard waste or land clearing debris.

Each year, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources issues a ban on open burning. Georgia's 55 counties participate in the ban, warning residents of its dangers.

According to the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, the ozone in the air can reach unhealthy levels during the summer months. EPD has identified open burning as a significant contributor of the pollutants that form ozone. Therefore, open burning is restricted during this time.

As an alternative, debris can be hauled to a commercial processing, grinding or composting operation. For a list of landfills in your area, please call EPD's Solid Waste Management Programs at 404-362-2692.
