GWCCA Board approves lead architect for new stadium project

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Georgia World Congress Center Authority Board of Governors voted unanimously to approve a $32.5 million contract for the lead architect, 360 Architecture, on the new stadium project.

360 Architecture unveiled some preliminary designs Tuesday for Atlanta's new football stadium.

"I'd like to think that people will really get excited and embrace this. Atlanta deserves a landmark building and I think there is every opportunity to make an icon and a building that people will come from around just to see," Bill Johnson with 360 Architecture said.

CBS Atlanta has learned that 360 Architecture designed the new MetLife stadium for the New York Giants and Jets. The firm is also are in the process of renovating Dolphin stadium in Miami and their state of the artwork can even can be seen in Iraq.

"I think we've said from the very beginning that this should be something very special to Atlanta," Atlanta Falcons President Rich McKay said. "It should be iconic, it should be something that draws people to Atlanta and people should want to come so they can get a look at the stadium and get in the stadium and by the same token it has to move the needle with respect to the fan experience."

Final approval for the new design will come in mid April 2014.
