Crime victim: Good Samaritan took a risk to help me

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A good Samaritan dodged gunfire while chasing three robbers who stole a man's wallet and car.

It happened late Monday night in midtown Atlanta along West Peachtree Street between Seventh and 12th streets.

The victim told CBS Atlanta News he was walking from the gym to his car when the crooks pulled out a gun and demanded everything he had. Then they spotted his car and took that too.

The victim does not want to be identified but said he was happy to be alive to see his college-aged daughter again.

"Last night was an opportunity where you get a chance to see what's really important. And just like that I could have been gone," the victim said.

The man told CBS Atlanta News that a stranger who stepped in to chase the thieves was brave for doing so.

Atlanta police said the good Samaritan didn't know the thieves were armed with a gun.

The good Samaritan told police he saw two thieves take off with the victim's car while a third drove away in another car.

The good Samaritan tried to get the license plate number of that other car, but he gave up when the robbers fired at his car and shattered his windshield.

He definitely took a huge risk for someone he didn't know.

"It's good to know there are people who care. I'm just glad he didn't get hurt. I'm just glad he didn't get hurt," said the victim.

Officers told CBS Atlanta News late Tuesday night that the stolen car has been found, but its wheels are missing.

Police are still looking for the three suspects.
