Smash-and-grab thieves burglarize two Atlanta businesses

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Police said smash-and-grab thieves targeted not one, but two, southwest Atlanta businesses early Wednesday morning.

CBS Atlanta News watched surveillance video that showed the men using a van to back into the Master Beauty Supply store on Headland Drive, near Greenbriar Mall, around 2:20 a.m. They hit the building twice, smashing a door, but the vehicle became stuck, blocking the entrance. The men, unable to get inside and steal anything, jumped into a black getaway car.

Police said that car then traveled less than 10 miles away to the West End Discount Pharmacy and Food Store on Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard. Because the front has an alarm system, they broke in through the drive-through window. That window, although equipped with burglar bars, still allowed the men to reach their arms in. They stole an estimated $3,000 in prescription drugs that were attainable from the window. George Doe, the pharmacy owner, said they took mostly patients' inhalers.

"The only reason they took these drugs is they couldn't enter. They came for more big items, like narcotics. Because they were unable to enter the pharmacy, that was the best thing they could take," said Doe.

A passerby saw the men and called police. All six burglars escaped.
