Quentric Williams took the witness stand in his own defense on Wednesday and told jurors he did not try to kill Georgia National Guardsman and karate master Mitt Lenix, last May.

"I jumped on the middle console of my truck and I fired one shot - not intended to kill him but scare him off," said Williams.

Williams said he thought Lenix had a gun, so he felt threatened when Lenix approached his truck.

Williams and his girlfriend, Angel Thomas, were sitting in the back of his truck at the Starlight Six Drive-In Theatre in DeKalb County when Lenix walked up to ask for help.

"I said, 'Did you shoot him?' He said, 'No, I just scared him.' So, I'm in the backseat still in shock," said Thomas.

Kristina Guede, Lenix's girlfriend, told jurors their truck's battery died halfway through the movie.

"It was a beautiful Atlanta spring day last year. The drive-in was one of our favorite spots in the city. That was our first time there together," said Guede.

Guede said Lenix pointed at the truck where he was going to ask for help.

"Then he walked away and I heard what sounded like firecrackers to me and a loud scream," said Guede.

DeKalb County police said Williams and Thomas then led officers on a high-speed chase. They crashed the rental truck he was driving. Williams jumped out and ran away. Police arrested him at a hotel in Gwinnett County the next day.

Williams' attorney told jurors he shot Lenix in self-defense and he ran from police because he was afraid. He was a convicted felon in possession of a gun.

The prosecutor and the defense rested their case on Wednesday. Thursday jurors will hear closing arguments and then deliberate.
