Man crashes into cop and shoppers' cars at Dunwoody shopping center

A 20-year-old man is in police custody after authorities said he stole a car, tried to flee from police when approached, and crashed into both police and shoppers' cars at a Dunwoody shopping center.

The chase happened Friday afternoon near 120 Perimeter Center West - in the parking lot of a Barnes and Noble bookstore.

That's where witnesses said they saw the man who police later arrested, Robert Goodman, peering into car windows and called police.

Genny McGraw works at a furniture store in the shopping center, and said her co-workers heard cars being smashed and gunfire.

"We ran to the back," McGraw said. "There were children screaming and a mother trying to get away with her baby."

That mother was Lisa Squires. Squires said she had just put her 3-year-old son into the back of her car when she saw the police chase begin.

"When he had wrecked into the cars that were parked and took out the police cars, his car started heading toward my car, so I grabbed my son, got him out of the car and started running to the other side of the parking lot," Squire said.

An officer fired shots at Goodman in order to to protect the lives and safety of police officers and pedestrians in the area, according to reports.

Goodman is charged with aggravated assault against an officer, aggravated assault, four counts of hit-and-run and other charges. Police also believe he stole the car he was fleeing in by using a screwdriver to get it started.
