Barrow County investigating multiple cases of tax fraud

Posted: Updated:

Some Barrow County taxpayers got a rude awakening when they tried to file their taxes during the past month.

"I want them in jail and I want double my money back," said Winder resident Beth Rosenzweig.

Rosenzweig said she is a victim of identity theft. She found out about it while filing her taxes last month.

"I said 'What?' This has never happened before so I have H & R Block to thank because they really did tell me what to do right away by going to the police station, and they really helped me more because I'm deaf and I read lips," Rosenzweig said.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Department began investigating Rosenzweig's case and realized the same thing happened to about a half a dozen other residents in town and they've found a connection in almost every one of the cases.

"We do know that several of the victims in at least two of the cases worked at the Gwinnett Clinic here in Winder and they have other locations in Gwinnett County as well, and we believe there are some other victims from those other locations," said Lt. Matt Guthas with the Barrow County Sheriff's Department.

Investigators said the IRS is also looking into the complaints. William Hubbard is also a victim with a disability. He suffers from heart trouble and being a victim of fraud certainly isn't good for his health.

"I was just totally shocked. I don't give my information out much except to the doctors and stuff like that and I don't give it out online unless it's directly to social security or somewhere like that," Hubbard said.

At this point, Barrow County investigators are not saying how the Gwinnett Clinc may be connected. If this happens to you, be sure to call the IRS, file a police report and notify each of the three major credit bureaus.
