Funerals held Saturday for Newnan family killed in fire

NEWNAN, GA (CBS46) -

It was an emotional day in Newnan as the last three victims of a fatal fire were laid to rest.

A joint service was held for Alonna McCrary and her daughters, Erial McCrary and Nekkiah White.

On April 27, a house fire killed them and two other kids.

Hundreds of people packed into the church, mostly wearing black, but friends and family wore orange because that was Alonna McCrary's favorite color.

Songs were sung and tears were shed, but amidst the tears there was room for a few smiles.

That's because out of the fire that started in the electrical box there wasn't just death, there was life and hope.

"Before you go and talk about what God has taken away, you ought to look at what God has done. There was a survivor," said Pastor D.E. Chamberlain.

The service was also filled with a few speeches on the lighter side that even sparked a few laughs.

Many said it was those positive words that allowed the community that has struggled to deal with the loss to finally to say goodbye.

Kenyanna Bennett is Alonna McCrary's sister. She said the funeral was a big part of moving on.

"It gives me closure. I know my sister is in a better place. I know my nieces are looking down on me," said Bennett.

"I feel better. I feel like my heart isn't heavy anymore. They're in a better place," said Porshia Ransby, a family friend.

But the service went much further than just providing closure.

What really got the crowd fired up was talk about what this tragedy can do for the community moving forward.

Many said it's exactly what they needed.

"It was my family today, but it might be somebody else's tomorrow. Everybody learn from this tragedy. If you have kids, love your kids," said Bennett.

"It was a word that every young person needed to here," said Ransby.
