Flood water near East Point homes brings dangerous creatures

EAST POINT, GA (CBS46) -

There has been flooding near homes on Taylor Avenue that are close to the East Point water tower for years.

But property owner Darryl Pollinger said the flooding is the worst that he has seen it.

"This was an absolute surprise that it got up this high," Pollinger said. "Essentially it's a debris-filled swamp that the city is responsible for. It's their property - back on the other side of mine."

Pollinger said there's more than just water that's taken over the back half of his property. He pointed out poisonous snakes, beavers and other animals that were swimming up to the basement of the home, which is submerged in the flood. There is a playground just feet away from where the flooding ends.

"It's a health hazard for everyone," Pollinger said. "There are snakes and I understand there are Water Moccasins adjacent to the children's park and just a short while ago there were children out here playing."

CBS Atlanta spoke to East Point City Manager Reggie Taylor and City Councilman Alex Gothard at the property on Sunday. Gothard said the city will make the property a priority.

"There's a collapsed storm drain pipe that's in there now," Gothard said. "The council recently voted to have this entire area fixed. So it's something that we're working hard on - we haven't forgotten about this area."

Gothard said crews should come and start pumping some of the water out of the area behind the homes on Monday, but rain could slow down the process. He also said that funding has been allocated for a project to permanently fix the issue which was set to begin at the end of May. Gothard said he is looking into whether or not the start date for the project can be moved up.
