Growing sinkhole shuts down road

Rushing water from Broadtree Creek gives you a sense of how much force is traveling underneath Glen Wilkie Trail Road in Cherokee County.

The rising creek caused a sinkhole on Glen Wilkie Trail that has eaten up more than half of the road. Maryland, who would not give CBS Atlanta her last name, lives near the sinkhole.

"We've seen the water go over the road, but we've never seen it take the road away," Maryland said.

When neighbors first noticed the sinkhole around 9 a.m. Sunday, it was much smaller. It doubled in size by 5:30 p.m. Monday.

"I'm surprised the road gave way as much as it did," Maryland said.

Tim Cavender, spokesman for Cherokee County Fire, said it will be at least two weeks before county workers can start fixing the roadway. They have to let the creek level go down and some of the water dry out.

"It is dangerous because it keeps eating away the soil from the asphalt. You can't see how far it's gone underneath it that's why we encourage people to stay away from it," Cavender said.

Workers with Cherokee County Roads and Bridges put up barricades and installed flashing lights to warn people.

"This hole wasn't this big Sunday. It keeps growing - it keeps getting bigger and it will continue to do so if we get some more rain," Cavender said.
