GAINESVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

A SWAT situation with shots fired ended peacefully in Gainsville on Tuesday.

It happened at the Motel 6 around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.

It all started when a man came to the motel to check on his friend, 31-year-old Justin Talton, a former bail bondsman in the area. The man noticed Talton acting very strangely and having several weapons so he left and called 911.

Officers arrived on the scene thinking the man had weapons and it didn't take long to confirm it.

Police said they could see guns sitting out through the window and that took things up a notch.

"Awareness is heightened. We begin by evacuating the premise immediately. Then make contact with relatives and family and try to get to the root issue of the problem," said Joe Britte with the Gainsville Police Department.

Some residents were evacuated, while others were told to just stay inside.

Those residents couldn't see what was going on, but they did hear the suspect fire a shot at some point.

Don Whatley lives in part of the motel that has been turned into apartments.

"I heard like a 'boom boom', like that," said Whatley

Police said that shot did come from inside the suspect's room, but it wasn't directed at the officers or himself.

The gunshot along with the huge response from law enforcement was enough to make residents nervous.

"They have to do what they have to do and I was worried about any kind of stray bullet with all that fire power," said Whatley.

Terry Hartley got nervous when she saw the bomb unit arrive.

"I'm thinking 'my kids are in here and cops ain't evacuating us. What's going to happen if the whole building blows up?' Just all kind of things were running through my mind," said Hartley.

That wasn't the case, and eventually the suspect came out peacefully.

Talton is now charged with reckless conduct, criminal damage to property, and more charges could be coming.
