Lake Allatoona campgrounds shut down as shores flood

ACWORTH, GA (CBS46) -

Park rangers at Lake Allatoona said Tuesday the lake is more than eight feet above full pool and is expected to rise another two feet by the end of the week. As a result, many of the camp sites are underwater, and hundreds of campers have been told to make other plans for the weekend.

"The alternative is for people to show up and have a reservation for something that's underwater, and of course, we don't want to do that," said Park Ranger Stephen Cain.

He added that this kind of flooding does occur every few years during times of excess rainfall. The lake is designed to help control flooding downstream, said Cain.

"That's why we own the property that we do, in order to put this flood water somewhere instead of downtown Rome, which I'm sure they appreciate," said Cain.
