Coweta County approves 13 tornado sirens

Posted: Updated:
NEWNAN, GA (CBS46) -

It has been in the works for more than five years, and now 13 tornado sirens, and possibly more, will be popping up across Coweta County.

County Emergency Management Director Jay Jones said he has been applying for funds and grants for five years to help pay for the sirens.

"Just to give people an early warning, as much warning as we can at facilities where large people gather to get them to safety quickly," Jones said.

Money from a Special Local Option Sales Tax or SPLOST will pay a majority of the cost. The cost will be roughly $400,000 for all 13.

"They will be placed in large population areas," Jones said. "Recreation fields, our two high schools that aren't covered by them, and our fairgrounds."

Currently, Newnan has eight tornado sirens. Other municipalities in the area have the option to tie into the system the county plans to install. Along with the siren, the new siren system will send out alerts via social media, text and email.
