Man turns table on criminal, puts him on the run

A criminal chose the wrong man to target in an armed robbery attempt.

The victim asked only to be identified as L.D. because he is concerned for his safety. He said he was in the Walmart parking lot on Fairington Road in Lithonia just before midnight on Wednesday.

L.D. said while he was loading groceries into his car, a man came up to him twice asking for change. He said something didn't feel right and he took his pistol from the glove compartment and put it on the seat.

According to L.D., as he was getting into his car, the man came up a third time, held the door open and put a gun to his face. L.D. said the man demanded money.

"I am fighting him off. I heard the click and it gave me time," said L.D.

L.D. said he thinks the man's gun jammed. It gave L.D. time to grab his gun and fire a shot. The man was still coming at him, said L.D., so he fired twice more. The man fell to the ground and L.D. ran to the store and called 911.

"Life is short. It was a quick second. It happened so quickly, you can't panic or nothing," said L.D. He said he got the gun for protection and he escaped the incident without getting hurt.

A witness told police he also heard three shots and saw the suspect limp away to a car. According to police, the suspect, who is 18, was found at a nearby gas station with two gunshot wounds to the stomach.

L.D. said he already identified the suspect in a lineup. The suspect is charged with attempted armed robbery.
