DeKalb County police are trying to figure out if two drive-by shootings early Friday morning outside Decatur were committed by the same group of men.

In the first case, two men were walking along Larkspur Terrace near Glenwood Road around 1 a.m., when a group of men in a white SUV pulled up, police said. One of the occupants began firing shots, killing one of the victims.

Juanita Hodges said the man killed is her grandson Javereon Barber, 19.

"My daughter called me around 3 this morning and told me my grandson was dead. I started hollering and screaming," said Hodges.

Hodges said her son and his friend were walking home from the store. She wants the person who shot him to do the right thing.

"To turn themselves in - I forgive them, my family forgives them but please turn yourself in because my grandson didn't deserve to die like that on the street," said Hodges.

Minutes after Barber was shot, a few miles away in the Flat Shoals area, a man and his girlfriend were walking their dog on Elkhorn Drive, police said, when a white SUV drove past.

"For some reason, the vehicle turned back around," said Lt. Dane Cunningham, of the DeKalb County Police Department. "Shots were fired. The black male subject suffered two gunshot wounds to his abdomen area. He's been transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and he's in critical condition."

Police have not released that victim's name.
