CLERMONT, GA (CBS46) -

The staff at the Clermont Veterinary Hospital has a story and a dog they said they will never forget.

"A spirit and strength and will to make it - grabbed the hearts of everyone to save her in return," said Dr. Linda Ingle, with Clermont Veterinary Hospital.

Kali, a 4-year-old lab, runs around now, but that was far from the case several months ago.

Kali was rushed to the hospital in January. She had alerted her elderly owner to a fire and saved him and his house. But, she sustained severe burns to over 50 percent her body. Ingle said most animals that injured are euthanized.

Ingle said Kali came in wagging her tail and had a will to live, so Ingle was going to fight to save her. Her practice led the effort to save Kali.

Another local practice helped and in February the University of Georgia Veterinary School also performed one of several surgeries to cover the exposed tissue. They used the skin from her tail to cover part of her back.

Kali's elderly owner could not take care of her injuries and surrendered her to the vet hospital. She adopted one of her caretakers there, Kim Hayes, and does not let her out of her sight.

"I feel very blessed and just very humble and honored that she chose me and I chose her," said Hayes.

A lot of people chose to help Kali. Her care cost more than $10,000 and Ingle didn't know how they were going to cover the cost. Kali's story of strength spread through social media and donations came in from all over the world. The donations paid for all of Kali's care.

Kali only has two very small raw spots on her back. She is almost completely covered in fur. Ingle said she is amazed by her progress and credits everyone's help for saving Kali.
