Copper thieves vandalize Southeast Atlanta church

Posted: Updated:

Members of a southeast Atlanta church got an unwelcome surprise Sunday morning when they discovered thieves had ripped copper wires and pipes out of the church and caused extensive damage.

Police arrived at New Faith Full Gospel Church on Jonesboro Road just inside I-285 shortly before 10 a.m. after a church member discovered the damage.

Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee said officers did not find any burglars inside the church, but saw the gaping holes in the small church's walls and ceiling.

"There was significant damage throughout the building that appeared to be caused by the removal of the wiring and pipes," he said.

No arrests have been made. Chafee said the incident remains under investigation.
