Man in custody after shootout with DeKalb County police

A man was taken into custody after a police-involved shootout in the Stone Mountain area of DeKalb County.

It happened Sunday evening along Rockbridge Road near South Hairston Road.

Officers blocked-off traffic there for several hours.

Some residences were stranded for more than two hours as police searched for evidence.

CBS Atlanta News talked to a man named "Darryl" who witnessed part of the shoot-out.

"My adrenaline and my heart were pumping fast," said the witness. "They were running up toward this gas station and I just heard shots. That's when I got nervous for myself and ducked down in my car drove into the gas station."

Police said that no one was hit during the gun fire, which ended with the suspect in custody.

The suspect's live-in girlfriend, Aundreonna Colbert, said he got mad when her mother didn't allow him to take their two young kids while they were in her care.

"He demeaned the kids and she didn't give then to him. And he lit a bag of something on fire next to her car in the driveway," said Colbert.

Colbert said the suspect left the house on foot but was soon spotted by police.

Capt. Myron Logan said the suspect refused their demands and took off running.

"There were shots exchanged between the officer and the suspect. We're just thankful no one was injured," said Logan.

"My kids are OK. I'm probably not going to be okay tonight because I'm just upset," said Colbert.

Police are still investigating and aren't commenting on possible charges at this time.
