Arizona asks for reconsideration in casino case

PHOENIX (AP) -

Opponents of a proposed Las Vegas-style casino near Phoenix are asking a federal judge to reconsider his recent ruling that declared the construction plans legal.

Officials representing Arizona, the Gila River Indian Community and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community filed the motion for partial reconsideration on Monday.

U.S. District Court Judge David Campbell said in a ruling last week that the Tohono O'odham Nation's plan to build a casino on the edge of Glendale doesn't violate the state's gambling laws.

But the plaintiffs say Campbell overlooked important evidence that showed the Nation had once made public statements saying that state law did prohibit new casinos in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

The tribe unveiled its plans for the sprawling casino complex miles from its existing reservation in 2009.
