Gunman shoots grandmother in face

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A grandmother is recovering at Grady Memorial Hospital after a gunman shot her in the face inside her own home.

A man walked up to the home of Annie Ruth Weems on Clifton Road in southeast Atlanta and shot her three times, said Titus Hester,  the victim's son-in-law.

"No one deserves anything like this to happen, no one and certainly not her," Hester said. "(She is) a very sweet person. She would never harm anyone."

Hester said Weems was her sitting in her bedroom, doing a puzzle, when the gunman opened fire just before 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Gilbert Rachel, who lives down the street from Weems, said whoever shot the 60-year-old woman should be severely punished.

"No holds barred. Throw the book at him and throw the bookshelf on top of him," Rachel said.

Hester doesn't think the gunman was aiming specifically for his mother-in-law. He also believes he knows who shot her and why.

Hester believes the gunman is someone the family knows well.

"I think this particular person is a very dangerous and psychotic individual," Hester said.

Hester said that man recently threatened his family.

"I will do anything I have to do to protect my family," Hester said.

Police would not confirm the name of gunman.

Investigators are still looking for a suspect.
