What is usually one of the happiest days of the year for any kid, the last day of school, turned out to be one of the most terrifying for one teenager.
A 13-year-old boy Thursday afternoon was abducted and driven around for hours until he escaped, police said.
The victim, who asked that he not be identified, said he had just gotten off his school bus at Carlton Road and Little Bear Drive when a man he did not know grabbed him and tossed him into a pickup truck.
"This man came out of the woods. I tried to run. He grabbed me and put his hand over my mouth," the teenager said.
The boy tried to fend off the man but he was too strong.
"He dragged me to his truck."
The teen said the man threatened him and told him to shut up.
"He said he had a gun," the boy said.
The victim, who cried as he told his story, feared he would never see his mother or father again.
"I was going to die," the teenager said.
The kidnapper drove around for hours, never saying what he intended to do.
The man pulled over into some woods in Union City, miles away from the boy's home.
The teen said a bird or a squirrel distracted the man. That is when the boy took off running.
The victim's father, who also asked to remain anonymous, said he called police after his son did not come home from school.
The victim's father wondered if he would he see his son again.
"I was panicked. I was crying. I didn't know what was going on. It's real scary, seeing the news, everybody getting kidnapped. Some come home. Some don't," the victim's father said.
Police found the boy early Thursday morning, asleep on a bench near the Shannon Mall in Union City.
The teen did not know where he was.
"I was disgusted that somebody would do something like that, but I was glad to get him back one piece," said the boy's father, who added he never wants to let his son out of his sight again.
"We're going to keep a close eye on him and not let him go far," the victim's father said.
The description of the suspect is vague.
He is between about 6' and 6'3" with short hair and a muscular build.
Police are searching for an older-model Ford pickup truck, green, with a single cab and dented rear license plate.
