Fire victim says apartment complex owes him money

FAYETTEVILLE, GA (CBS46) -

CBS Atlanta News began investigating a metro Atlanta apartment complex Thursday after a former tenant said the complex failed to refund his money after he was displaced during a fire in March.

MarQuai Moss is a single dad who lost everything when the blaze destroyed his building at the Weatherly Walk apartments on Knight Way.

It's uncertain what caused the fire according to Fayette County firefighters, but for Moss - one thing is certain.

"It's just bad that we have to wait this long to get our money back," Moss said.

Moss said management promised to refund his security deposit and even two week's worth of rent after the fire forced him out, but that was 10 weeks ago.

"I mean, the whole community of Fayetteville came out and the schools, the churches donated stuff and helped, but now I have to fight for $800 from my apartment complex for something I'm owed," Moss said.

CBS Atlanta News went to the leasing office to inquire about the delay in refunding the money, but management locked up the office at 1 p.m. and never returned.

Then CBS Atlanta's Adam Murphy called the property manager on the phone and no one with Alexander Properties was available.

"The company, they're not responsible for the fire, but if they had a heart it seems like they would do something for the families to make a smoother transition and holding back our rent and deposit I don't feel is making a smooth transition at all," Moss said.

A sign on the leasing office door said management would return Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Late Thursday afternoon, CBS Atlanta's Adam Murphy received a call from Alexander Properties stating that they are working with the insurance company to issue refund checks to the victims by the close of business.
