Traffic stop leads to shooting investigation

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

What started as routine a traffic stop on Northside Drive in northwest Atlanta ended with a 58-year-old man being rushed to the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound.

Investigators told CBS Atlanta Friday morning that the victim's car was traveling at an extremely slow rate of speed, which led the officer to pull the car over.

Atlanta police said in a press briefing the first thing the patrol officer noticed were multiple bullet holes in the car.

Police don't know at this point where the shooting took place or what motivated the shooter to pull the trigger.

"We are working the crime scene inside the vehicle, gathering as much evidence as possible," said Capt. Lee Peek.

Investigators expect to learn more once the man is treated by doctors.

"Once he gets ready or out of surgery, we'll have a better opportunity to find out exactly where it happened," Peek said.

According to Atlanta police, the victim was last listed in stable condition.
