Busy weekend expected on lake, officers will be patrolling

BARTOW COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Memorial Day weekend kicks off lake season for hundreds of boaters in Georgia.

Cathy Garrison took her daughter and a boatload of friends out on Lake Allatoona Friday.

"This lake is crazy because it's so small. Tomorrow is going to be insane," Garrison said.

It's one of the busiest lake weekends of the year and while having a good time is a top priority, so is safety.

"There are so many things I'm watching for, like I can't have a wake and I'm watching for boats coming from either direction," Garrison said.

Law enforcement officers are already on the water and have a zero tolerance for boaters breaking the law.

One common violation is boats following too closely. Boaters must stay at least 100 feet away from other watercraft.

Officers will also be stopping boaters that are suspected of boating under the influence of alcohol. The new legal limit is .08.

Plus, anyone under the age of 13 will be required to wear a life jacket while on board a moving vessel.

"When they were 13 they had the water safety classes and we never allow alcohol on this boat," Garrison said.
