Flames gutted a two-story home in Gwinnett County during Memorial Day weekend.
Firefighters were called to a home in the 2300 block of Broad Creek Drive in Stone Mountain around 2:48 p.m. Saturday. Crews found heavy smoke showing from the back of the home when they arrived at the property.
Heavy fire and smoke forced firefighters to retreat after they entered the home to fight the flames. Other crews protected neighboring homes.
Firefighters knocked down the bulk of the flames in the back of the house, allowing other crews to re-enter the home to put out the fire. The fire was under control at 3:52 p.m.
The family was not at home when the fire started. They will be displaced due to the heavy structural damage throughout the house, according to the Gwinnett County Fire Department.
The fire is under investigation.
