ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Police are stepping up patrols in East Atlanta after a series of violent attacks this weekend.

One man was killed and another one wounded after a suspect shot them during a robbery at the intersection of May Avenue and Flat Shoals Avenue just before midnight Saturday.

"I'm shocked that there have been so many murders around here," said Clyde Anderson who works in East Atlanta. "It hasn't been like that in this area."

Saturday's murder was one of several attacks reported after 10 p.m. In each case, the suspect pulled a gun on the victims and stole their money or vehicle.

"It does make you kind of a little nervous, especially me I walk around here all the time," said Jarred Orr, who works at a local pizza restaurant.

Police plan to increase foot patrols and drive through the area with their blue flashing lights on Monday night.

Neighborhood groups are also looking into improved lighting.

"You shouldn't have to be afraid to walk at night," said Corday Reid who plans to move from Buckhead to East Atlanta.

She and her husband said the rash of attacks will not change their plans.

"The neighborhood will have to band together and make sure it doesn't continue," said Ray Reid.

Atlanta police are investigation whether the crimes are connected. They are asking anyone with information to call authorities.
