Taxi driver shot and killed outside DeKalb Apartment complex

A taxi driver was shot and killed outside an apartment complex early Friday morning.

Dedric Darcelin, a driver for Checker Cab, picked up a customer around 2 a.m. Friday from Auburn Avenue in downtown Atlanta, according to company president Rick Hewatt.

Someone shot and killed Darcelin inside his own taxi at the Oak Creek Apartments on Northern Avenue in Avondale Estates, said DeKalb County police.

Checker Cab is a family-run business and drivers are part of that extended family, said Hewatt.

When fellow drivers found out Darcelin was murdered, they felt like they lost a brother.

"Devastating, it's devastating to us," Hewatt said.

Darcelin, who drove for the company for six years, was friendly and well-liked, said Hewatt.

"Nice guy, very nice guy. He was always saying hello, nice fellow," Hewatt said. "It's a bad day to be a driver."

Michael Washington, a resident at Oak Creek, said he heard a commotion around the time Darcelin was shot.

"I heard a loud noise. I thought it was glass," Washington said.

Washington said he now is concerned about his own safety.

"It's going to make me wonder, maybe I should move to a more secure area," Washington said.

Hewatt said taxi drivers never know who will get into their cab or how much danger any given night can bring.

"We've had drivers killed, shot, beaten stabbed, you name it. It's very dangerous out there for the cab drivers," Hewatt said.

Police are still searching for the shooter.
