The official forecast for the 2013 hurricane season calls for an above-average amount of storm activity.
13-20 named storms are forecast, which is above the average of 12. Named storms include tropical storms with winds of at least 39 mph.
7-11 hurricanes are forecast, which is also above the average of 6. Hurricanes have winds of at least 74 mph.
3-6 major hurricanes are forecast, which is above the average of 3. Major hurricanes are category 3 storms or stronger with winds of at least 111 mph.
Why so active?
More storms are forecast this season due to warmer water temperatures in the Atlantic ocean. In addition, more storms forecast to develop off the coast of Africa, which often times move into the western Atlantic ocean.
Hurricane season is through November 30.
