One of the three teenagers suspected in the death of a 14-year-old Grayson High School student last year appeared before a Gwinnett County Superior Court judge Tuesday morning.

Larnell Sillah, 15, is charged with murder and felony murder in the death of his classmate, Paul Sampleton Jr.

Sampleton was found dead by his father in their home last Dec. 19, the day school let out for Christmas break. Gwinnett County investigators believe Sampleton was ambushed at the house by Sillah, Romaine Stewart, 18, and Achiel Morgan, 15, who targeted him for his collection of expensive shoes. Investigators said eight pairs of those shoes were stolen from the house that day.

Investigators said Sampleton died after he was tied up and shot three times.

Sillah is the only of the three suspects facing a murder charge. A judge found probable cause in a March preliminary hearing to bind the case over to superior court.

Sillah's appearance in superior court was a bond hearing. His attorney, Tom West, said Sillah was denied bond in April, but West is confident that new information obtained during the investigation might give his client another chance at being granted bond.

"They don't have any evidence that my client did it," said West. "We've got some co-defendants that are trying to cut sweetheart deals, and things like that, but they don't have evidence that links my client to the robbery, and killing."

The judge booted West off the case, citing a conflict of interest, and will appoint a new attorney.
