More than 100 Fulton County students unable to access online classes

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

More than 100 Fulton County high school students signed up for online classes this summer, but they haven't been able to make the grade and it's not their fault.

Tomaira Chatman may not be a math genius, but she's smart enough to know that the school system's online summer classes don't add up.

"I was very prepared to do this and the website is complicating and I'm not used to it and I haven't even started yet. I'm still waiting for approval," Chatman said.

Chatman and her mother have been trying to access the online math classes for a solid week and now she's behind on her work.

"It's really hard because I still have lectures I need to do for both semesters," Chatman said.

And as a rising senior at North Springs Charter High School, she needs the courses to graduate.

"I just really want to pass this class so I can become a senior next year and I feel as if they're not really caring or trying hard enough," Chatman said.

So when Chatman and her mother couldn't log into the online classes on their computer, they logged into email and contacted CBS Atlanta News for help.

CBS Atlanta News contacted the school system and learned that they revamped their summer online classes this year causing delays for more than 100 students.

Plus, the executive director of technical education emailed Chatman and her mother this statement, "I apologize for allowing any internal/operational concern to become an inconvenience for you and your family and the Fulton County community can expect to see rapid resolution of the outstanding issues in log in and enrollment for the Fulton virtual students."

"Just make it fair and give us extra time to do the work," Chatman said.

A Fulton County spokesperson said the issue should be resolved Friday and every student should be able to begin classes. They also said no student will be penalized and assignments will be adjusted so no one is behind on their work.
