Two sexual assaults spark safety meeting

Posted: Updated:

Residents at the Marquis Ridge Apartment Complex in Decatur are fed up with crime there and they're doing something about it.

The apartment management hosted a meeting Tuesday night with police, security companies and about 25 residents.

The first part of the meeting was to make sure everyone in the complex knew about the recent crimes.

A 10-year-old girl woke up to a man performing a sex act in front of her on the couch. This was just days before a woman and her girlfriend woke up to find a man exposing himself to them.

It was news that still came as a shock to some despite all the police activity and news coverage.

Vernon Saliard is fairly new to the complex and had no idea there were any problems.

"I didn't know there was someone actually climbing through windows in the complex. I didn't know, that so until I came to the meeting, I was in the dark," said Saliard.

Police handed out flyers with a sketch of the suspect and they encouraged people to speak up if they see something suspicious.

"Just say something. If you hear something, call the police. Just don't turn a blind eye to what's going on in the community," said Saliard.

Management also stepped up, taking action against a group it considered the weak link.

"They actually fired the security company that was here because they weren't taking care of business, so they hired another security firm that starts on Friday," said Michael Kindle, a representative from ADT.

The complex also asked residents to do their part.

"They're going to have a team watch program going where they pick a person out of each building and they're going to be more proactive with checking who comes in and out," said Kindle.

But will it all actually work?

The suspect is still on the loose and police don't have any big leads other than a sketch.

It's too early to tell, but residents said the meeting was at least a good first step.

The plan is to continue having meetings to not only help catch the suspect who's committing the sexual assaults but also to prevent all crime from going on inside the complex.
