Ga. storm leaves 65,000 without power

ATLANTA (AP) -

Georgia Power officials say a system of severe thunderstorms has left about 65,000 customers without power.

Severe thunderstorm warnings were in effect throughout much of north and middle Georgia Thursday evening as the storm dumped heavy rain and lit up the night sky with lightning. Severe thunderstorm warnings were expected to expire early Friday morning.

There were multiple reports of downed trees throughout north Georgia. Georgia Power officials said about 65,000 customers lost power as of 4:30 a.m.

National Weather Service forecasters say falling trees left two people with non-life threatening injuries in Canton, and the agency would likely send officials to Cherokee County Friday to determine if a tornado touched down there.

Meteorologists have said it looked like the storm was capable of producing a twister near Holly Springs.
