ATLANTA (CBS46/CNN) -

Russian President Vladimir Putin is at the center of a Super Bowl controversy with an NFL owner.

According to CBS Sports.com, New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft said Putin stole his 2004-2005 champion ring when Kraft visited in Russia in 2005.

Putin denies stealing the ring and said it was a gift. According to CBS Sports.com, Kraft admitted to saying he gave it as a gift when he released a statement back in 2005 saying, "I decided to give him the ring as a symbol of the respect and admiration that I have for the Russian people and the leadership of President Putin." But, Kraft went on to say in that article that he was encouraged by White House officials to say he gave Putin the ring for the best interest of U.S.-Soviet relations.

As for the ring itself, the New York Post says the ring is in the Kremlin Library.
