CEO Burrell Ellis bonds out of jail

Posted: Updated:

DeKalb County CEO Burrell Ellis has bonded out of jail, just hours after being indicted on 15 charges including attempted extortion, making false statements and theft by taking.

DeKalb County District Attorney Robert James held a press conference Tuesday to announce the charges outlined in the indictment.

According to the indictment, Ellis threatened to prevent companies from receiving business from DeKalb County unless they contributed to his campaign.

The indictment also says Ellis had county workers compiling lists of companies that had contracts with the county so Ellis could solicit campaign contributions from them. The indictment says this went on during work hours when they were being paid by the county.

Authorities raided Ellis' Stone Mountain home back in January. The raid happened the same day Ellis testified before a grand jury. Investigators removed boxes and a computer hard drive. They also searched several county offices and the office of Ellis' former campaign manager.

Ellis turned himself in to the DeKalb County Jail Tuesday and bonded out a few hours later.
