Residents at senior living center concerned about safety

Posted: Updated:

Some people who live in the Columbia Senior MLK Village or have family members that do said management at the property isn't doing enough to protect them.

"My brothers and sisters we are concerned about the safety of my mother," said Sandra, whose mother lives in the facility. Sandra didn't want to give her last name because she said she's worried her mother may be targeted if she speaks out. Sandra said her mother and many other residents are scared of Angela Freeman and Freeman's mother, Bettye Blackman. Blackman, who lives in the building, and Freeman, who Sandra said visits frequently, were arrested last month after police said they attacked several people during a picnic.

"I was trying to stay out the way but the lady was just going wild with the cane, then the daughter picks up a walker, not a regular walker, but the one you can sit down on with the seat and little basket. She started beating Jimmy with it," said Roxanne Amer, who used to live at the facility. "A couple of days ago Freeman was walking around with a beer in her hand, and people see her coming and going, and that makes seniors nervous."

Sandra and Amer said Freeman and Blackman have caused problems in the past that have required police to respond, and they said they don't understand why Blackman and Freeman have not been kicked out.

"She has done so many things to these seniors and now they are terrified. I purchased mace for most of the seniors and I'm looking for some Taser guns, but they shouldn't have to live that way," Sandra said.

Wednesday afternoon Columbia Senior MLK Village released a statement: "We are aware of the incident involving residents, which occurred over Memorial Day weekend, and we have been listening to the concerns of our residents involved in the situation. We are engaging in appropriate legal response to mitigate the tension and resolve the situation. Unfortunately, we are unable to go into detail, due to legal and privacy regulations."
